Going Geek: Building a Brand & Conference
I created and co-founded Geekend, a creative conference for tech enthusiasts and professionals.
In 2009, I co-founded Geekend, an interactive conference with a mission to support today's creative and tech community and inspire the next generation of geeks.
On a shoestring budget and with a volunteer army, the first Geekend was born in the fall of 2009. The Savannah, GA, event attracted speakers from Xbox and Behance, along with hundreds of eager attendees. The event became an annual attraction in Savannah, drawing more than 1,000 attendees each year, and spawning a Geekend Boston event in partnership with the Direct Marketing Association.
Part of the goal of Geekend was to create a fun, non-typical conference. From the brand logo to its robot mascots and lighthearted copy (even the speaker agreements were fun to read), Geekend stood apart.
The fun side of Geekend was important, but so was the more serious side. Established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, proceeds from the event were used to support local student/teacher initiatives in Savannah.
My role: Co-Founder, Fundraiser, Creative Director, Copywriter, Conference Planner
