Truth be told, I’ve never been much of a winter person. But when we moved to Traverse City a few years ago, I realized I could either stay indoors, waiting for better weather, or I could adapt. I chose the latter. I also learned that the saying there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes also rings true. Winter up north means a chance to do some unique things. Here’s my top five things to do in Traverse City in the winter.
1) Get on the Trails
Even if you’re not a skier, there are still plenty of great outdoor options for the winter. I discovered snowshoeing when we moved here, and it remains one of my favorite winter activities. If you don’t have your own, rent a pair in town at High Five Threads over at Grand Traverse Commons. And you can hit the trail right there in the forest just behind the old state hospital buildings. Better yet, make a day of it with brunch inside at Red Spire or stop in at the local farmer’s market if you happen to be there on a Saturday.

2) Sit in an Igloo
The beer garden at Hop Lot Brewing turns into an igloo-filled winter wonderland this time of the year. Book an igloo ahead of time online and enjoy the picturesque setting. Another bonus to visiting Hop Lot this time of year is that tacos are typically back! The food menu typically shifts from the summer offerings to include my favorite taco plate.
3) Cozy Up with Great Food (and a Fireplace)
It’s the perfect time of year to enjoy the amazing restaurants in the TC area—and without the summer crowds. Ideally, find a spot with a fireplace or some just plain cozy vibes, and settle in. For a splurge, the Boathouse on Old Mission Peninsula is always a good bet. I was lucky enough to be there for the return of elk to the menu this winter. Farm Club is another great option with plenty of farm-to-table goodies. And you’ll often even see people cruising in on their cross-country skis.
4) Shopping and a Hot Beverage

Head to downtown Traverse City to walk along the several blocks of storefronts with everything from a great locally-owned book shop, Horizon Books, to everything your K9 friend may need over at Contigo Dogs. Along the way, warm up with a coffee, hot chocolate, or the tasty chai tea latte at Espresso Bay.
5) Hit a Patio
Yes, seriously. Some winter days bless us with sunshine, and for me, it’s the perfect excuse to soak up some vitamin D from a patio. Left Foot Charley over at Grand Traverse Commons is a favorite, and this time of the year, they often have the popular Cinnamon Girl cider available hot. Or just grab a stellar glass of wine there, bundle up, and enjoy. Cheers!
